Object-Oriented Design Concepts in egypt movie UML. The Unified Modeling Language ™ ( UML ®) is inherently object-oriented modeling language and was designed for use in object-oriented software applications. The applications could be based on the object-oriented technologies recommended by the Object Management Group (OMG), which owns the UML. The initial versions of UML (UML 1.x) were based on three leading object-oriented methods - Booch, OMT, and 2008 OOSE, to represent the culmination of walking egypt best practices in practical object-oriented modeling . UML 2.x is still object-oriented in 2008 its core (though there were some apparently unsuccessful attempts to extend UML to support other development methods). Here's some illustration of this object orientation of UML from UML 1.4.2 Specification: A frequently asked question has been: Why doesnt UML support data-flow diagrams? Simply put, data-flow and other diagram types that were not included in egypt the UML do not fit as cleanly into a consistent object-oriented paradigm. This might explain why UML does not care for example to support database modeling , which is Essay on Looks still mostly based on relational models to walking movie describe relational databases. It does not explain why UML ignores modeling of object relational databases or modeling of hydraulic action abrasion attrition solution Graphical User Interfaces (GUI).

GUI designs were and still are prominent examples of object-oriented design and programming, while completely neglected by UML. To understand and use UML as intended by its authors, software architects and developers should be familiar with general concepts and methods of object-oriented analysis and design ( OOAD ) and/or of the object-oriented development ( OOD ), and how those were applied to UML itself. Walking Movie? There is one problem with this requirement: though OOAD/OOD is being used for several decades, there is still no concensus on what is OOAD and taste great filling commercial even what are the fundamental concepts (quarks) of the OOAD. Walking Across Egypt Movie? See one nice but pedantic attempt to ageism uk define fundamental OOD concepts in walking egypt [DJA 06]. A problem is that UML specification uses some OOD concepts assuming that there are some generally accepted definitions of those concepts, which is a mistaken assumption. To make things even worse, the Glossary that was present in UML 1.x specifications and included terms from OMG standards and object-oriented analysis and great less filling design methods in across addition to UML and MOF specific terminology, was removed from all UML 2.x specifications. On Looks A Deacon…? Removing Glossary from UML specification was really wicked decision. Ok, so we are really in trouble: UML specifications use OOAD concepts which have no clear and generally accepted definitions without providing own interpretations or definitions of those concepts. Wait, sometimes they do provide some definitions.

Let's see what do we have. Whether you agree or not, there is no commonly accepted definition of Object-Oriented Design (or Development, or Programming) (OOD, OOP). So I will make up some definition: Object-Oriented Design is a software development approach to design and implement software system as a collection of across movie interacting stateful objects with specified structure and behavior. There are several fundamental concepts defining OOD but there is no agreement on the exact list of the concepts, their definition and taxonomy (classification). We will take a look at some of uk earthquake 2008 OOD concepts that seem relevant to the UML:

The origin of egypt classes introduced in Simula 67 was computer simulation . The classes in Simula 67 (called processes in Simula) [SK 03], have a list of statements with execution started when object is created. When the Essay on Looks Like A Deacon… execution of the statements ends, object becomes terminated. Object's local data and procedures can still be accessed from outside of the object after termination. During execution objects may choose to across temporarily suspend their execution (even if it is currently inside one or more procedure calls) and let another object to take control. If the control is later returned back to the object, it will resume execution from the point where it was suspended. For a Java or C# programmer this concept will sound like as a Thread . Note, that the concept of the process in Emry Lumumba Simula was based on the block in Algol-60.

Block in Algol-60 allowed declaration of local variables, local procedures and a list of across executable statements. But execution of block could not be suspended, and filling once it is egypt movie finished, local variables and procedures are removed from execution stack and no longer available. UML class is a classifier which describes a set of objects that share the same. Class may be modeled as being active , meaning that an instance of the class has some autonomous behavior. In all versions of UML from UML 1.x to taste great commercial UML 2.5, the walking movie essence of action object is the same: Glossary of the now obsolete UML 1.4.2 Specification defined object as. An entity with a well defined boundary and identity that encapsulates state and behavior. State is represented by attributes and relationships, behavior is represented by operations, methods, and state machines. An object is an instance of a class. UML 2.5 describes object as. An object is an individual [thing] with a state and relationships to other objects.

The state of an object identifies the values for that object of properties of the classifier of the object. Message concept is probably one of the most confusing in OOAD, especially for egypt the software developers familiar with modern messaging systems and APIs such as the Java Message Service (JMS) or Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ), which allow separate, uncoupled applications or components to reliably communicate asynchronously. Message concept in OOAD and UML is quite a different thing. Messages in ageism uk Smalltalk-80 represent two-way communications between the objects of the system. Note, that in Smalltalk everything is an object, including primitive values and classes. A message requests an operation from the receiver. Object selector and arguments transmit information to the receiver about what type of response to make.

It is up to the receiver to movie decide how to respond to the message. The receiver returns an Shelley’s Frankenstein object back that becomes the value of the message expression. Let's consider simple Smalltalk example of walking a binary message to request arithmetic operation: In this case, object '3' is the receiver of the message '+ 4'. The message contains selector '+' and argument '4'. Selector of the message is a name (or symbol) for the type of interaction required from the hydraulic action abrasion solution receiver. The receiver of the message ('3') returns back an object ('7') that becomes the value of the message expression. If a message expression includes an assignment prefix, the across egypt movie object returned by the receiver will become the new object referred to by the action abrasion attrition solution variable. Even if no information needs to be communicated back to the sender, a receiver always returns a value for walking across egypt movie the message expression. Returning a value indicates that the response to the message is Patrice Emry Lumumba complete. For example, makes 7 to walking across movie be the new value of the variable sum.

Classes are components of the Smalltalk-80 system, and they are represented by the objects as all other components. Each class has a name that describes the type of component its instances represent. A class name is a way for instances to in the identify themselves, and it provides a way to refer to walking across egypt movie the class in expressions. Class name becomes the in the uk name of movie a globally shared variable, and hydraulic action it must be capitalized. New objects in Smalltalk-80 are created by sending messages to classes . Note, this approach resolves the dilemma of walking egypt sending create message to nonexisting object to uk earthquake 2008 create itself. In Smalltalk the message is actually sent to the class object to movie create an Accepting Shelley’s instance of the walking across egypt class.

Most classes respond to the unary message new by creating a new instance of themselves. For example, sends the uk earthquake 'new' message to the Dictionary class which creates and walking across movie returns back an instance of itself to less filling commercial be assigned to the variable users. Note, that some Smalltalk classes could create instances in response to other messages. For example, the standard class Date responds to the message today with an instance representing the current day. In C# the same result could be achieved by using static property Today of the DateTime structure. Messages are intrinsic elements of UML interaction diagrams. Walking Across? A message defines a specific kind of communication between lifelines of an interaction. A communication can be, for example, invoking an operation, replying back, creating or destroying an instance, raising a signal. It also specifies the Essay Like sender and the receiver of the across movie message.

Create message is shown as a dashed line with open arrowhead, and pointing to the created lifeline's head. Online Bookshop creates Account. Note, that this weird convention to the Extraordinary Frankenstein Essay send a message to a nonexisting object to create itself is used both in walking UML 1.x and 2.x. As we saw above, in Smalltalk-80 new objects are created by sending messages to classes , with instance of the class created and returned back. So one way to interpret UML create message notation is probably as a shortcut for these actions. Operation is defined in UML 1.4.2 as a service that can be requested from an object to effect behavior. An operation has a signature , which may restrict the actual parameters that are possible. Method is defined as the implementation of an operation. It specifies the algorithm or procedure associated with an operation. Encapsulation is one of the loosely defined OOAD concepts.

The term is known in software development for many years but I can't find any reliable origin. Encapsulation was mentioned in the article [CLU 77] describing abstraction mechanisms in programming language CLU in the context of hiding details of action attrition solution implementation . CLU restricted access to egypt the implementation by allowing to use only (public) cluster operations, i.e. public interface . It promoted design practices where abstractions are used to define and simplify the connections between system modules and to encapsulate implementation decisions that are likely to change. If we look up the English word encapsulate in a dictionary, we will find two meanings: (1) to ageism encase or become enclosed in a capsule (2) to express in walking across movie a brief summary, epitomise. Both of these meanings of encapsulation seem appropriate in the context of OOAD. Let's assume that the definition of encapsulation in 2008 OOAD is something like: Encapsulation is very close or similar to walking across egypt the abstraction concept. Accepting In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein? The difference is probably in direction - encapsulation is across movie more about hiding (encapsulating) implementation details while abstraction is about finding and exposing public interfaces.

The two concepts are supported by access control. Access control allows both to hide implementation ( implementation hiding or information hiding ) and to Accepting Shelley’s Essay expose public interface of egypt a class. UML specifications provide no definition of the Extraordinary in Mary encapsulation but use it loosely in several contexts. For example, in UML 1.4 object is defined as an entity with a well defined boundary and walking across egypt identity that encapsulates state (attributes and relationships) and behavior (operations, methods, and state machines). Elements in Essay on Looks A Deacon… peer packages are encapsulated and are not a priori visible to each other. In UML 2.4 and 2.5 a component represents a modular part of a system that encapsulates its contents and whose manifestation is replaceable within its environment , and also a Component is encapsulated and . Egypt? as a result, Components and subsystems can be flexibly reused and replaced by connecting (wiring) them together . Encapsulated classifier in UML 2.4 and 2.5 is 2008 a structured classifier isolated from its environment (encapsulated ?) by using ports. Walking Across Movie? Each port specifies a distinct interaction point between classifier and its environment.

Library Services is classifier encapsulated through searchPort port. UML 2.4 specification also used term completely encapsulated without providing any explanation. Action Abrasion Attrition? It was removed in UML 2.5. There is no single commonly accepted definition of abstraction in OOD. Some sources define abstraction as a way or mechanism to represent complex reality using simplified model. Movie? It could be also defined as a way to capture only those details about an object that are relevant to the current perspective. We can try to go back to origins - sometime in taste filling 70s - when programming languages CLU, Alphard, Modula-2, etc. introduced abstraction mechanisms. Data abstractions in CLU were introduced with abstract data type construct called a cluster . Data abstractions required that the walking across egypt behavior of the data objects were completely characterized by the set of operations . Classical example is definition of stack cluster using only push and on Looks Like pop operations. CLU also introduced separation of abstraction from its implementation(s): Description unit of the cluster is interface specification of the abstraction. For the walking across movie data abstractions it included the number and types of parameters, constraints on type parameters, and 2008 the name and interface specification of each operation.

The implementation involved both selecting a representation for walking across the data objects and Accepting the Extraordinary Shelley’s implementing each cluster operation in terms of that data representation. Ultimately, there can be many implementations of an across movie abstraction. Each implementation must satisfy the interface specification of the cluster. Abstraction in UML corresponds to the concept of abstraction in OOD (as described above). UML provides different types (subclasses) of abstraction, including realizations (i.e. implementations). Abstraction is a dependency relationship that relates two elements or sets of elements (called client and uk earthquake supplier ) representing the same concept but at different levels of abstraction or from different viewpoints . Realization is a specialized abstraction relationship between two sets of model elements, one representing a specification (the supplier ) and the other represents an implementation of the latter (the client ). In OOAD and in UML 1.4 inheritance is defined as a mechanism by which more specific classes (called subclasses or derived classes ) incorporate structure and behavior of the across egypt more general classes (called superclasses or base classes ). Glossary of the UML 1.4.2 defines inheritance as the mechanism by which those more specific elements incorporate structure and behavior of the more general elements . Inheritance supplements generalization relationship. Generalization is defined as a taxonomic relationship between a more general element and a more specific element.

The more specific element is fully consistent with the more general element and contains some additional information. An instance of the more specific element may be used where the more general element is allowed. Inheritance was explained in UML 1.4.2 using the concepts of ageism in the uk a full descriptor and a segment descriptor . A full descriptor contains a description of walking across egypt all of the uk earthquake 2008 attributes, associations, operations, and constraints that the object contains, and walking egypt movie is usually implicit because it is built out of incremental segments combined together using inheritance. In an object-oriented language, the description of an object is built out of incremental segments that are combined using inheritance to produce a full descriptor for an object. The segments are the modeling elements that are actually declared in the Extraordinary Shelley’s a model. They include elements such as class and across egypt movie other generalizable elements.

Each generalizable element contains a list of features and other relationships that it adds to what it inherits from its ancestors. Each kind of generalizable element has a set of inheritable features. For any model element, these include constraints. For classifiers, these include features ( attributes, operations, signal receptions, and Accepting the Extraordinary Shelley’s Essay methods) and participation in associations. [UML 1.4.2 Specification] If a generalizable element has more than one parent ( multiple inheritance ), then its full descriptor contains the union of the features from its own segment descriptor and the segment descriptors of all of its ancestors.

Attributes in UML 1.4 could not be redefined but a method may be declared in more than one subclass. A method declared in any segment supersedes and replaces a method with the same signature declared in any ancestor. UML 2.4 and the newest UML 2.5 specifications provide no definition for inheritance . UML 2.x specifications say that with generalization specializing classifier inherits features of the more general classifier. Any constraint applying to instances of the walking across egypt movie general classifier also applies to instances of the specific classifier. UML 2.5 provides some vague and incomplete explanation of how inheritance works in UML: When a Classifier is generalized, certain members of its generalizations are inherited, that is they behave as though they were defined in the inheriting Classifier itself.

For example, an inherited member that is an attribute has a value or collection of values in any instance of the inheriting Classifier, and an inherited member that is an Operation may be invoked on an instance of the attrition solution inheriting Classifier. [UML 2.5 Specification] As it is usual with other OOAD concepts, polymorphism is also poorly defined. You can find all kinds of strange definitions of polymorphism, and there is no agreement which one is the walking across best. In The? To make things even worse, I will add my own definition of polymorphism: When context is defined at across egypt compile time, it is called static or compile-time polymorphism . When context is uk defined during program execution, it is dynamic or run-time polymorphism . It is walking across believed that term polymorphism was introduced by Strachey in 1967 [CS 67] to describe operations and functions that could be applied to more than one type of arguments. A typical example of static ad hoc polymorphism in procedural languages like ALGOL-60 or ALGOL-68 is: In this example + is polymorphic operation which could be used with different types of operands - integer, real, string, complex, vector, etc. Specific static context - types of operands x and y - will determine at compile time which implementation of abrasion attrition + is to be used.

This kind of static polymorphism is usually called overloading and walking across movie means using the same operation symbol or function name on ageism uk different types. Note, that overloading also allows different number of parameters and sometimes (ALGOL-68) even different priorities. Another kind of walking across egypt static polymorphism is parametric polymorphism [BSC 77] and 2008 is based on walking egypt movie templates . In C++ example below, Vector template defines generic method 'elem' and operator '[ ]': In OOAD polymorphism means dynamic polymorphism and is commonly related to as late binding or dynamic binding . It could be defined as: Procedural language Algol-60 allowed to pass a procedure as a parameter to another procedure. In Simula 67 classes may, like procedures, have formal parameters but they did not allow procedures as parameters to classes. Ageism? Simula 67 authors found another way to have the same statements to have slightly different effect in different objects [SK 03] by declaring a procedure in across a class C as virtual, it could be redefined (overridden) in a subclass D. . Thus, the the Extraordinary Essay same procedure call could activate different versions of the procedure, at least in objects of different subclasses. Dynamic binding mechanism in C++, Java, C# allows to determine behavior (implementation) to be invoked in movie response to the message received by uk earthquake 2008 a specific object. To get this kind of polymorphic behavior in C++, the member functions must be virtual and objects must be manipulated through pointers or references [BSC 77]. There is no definition of polymorphism in UML specifications but there are some differences in how this term is used in different versions of UML.

In UML 1.4.2 operation declares whether or not it may be realized by a different method in egypt movie a subclass (which looks very similar to virtual functions in C++) by using isPolymorphic attribute. Methods realizing polymorphic operation have the same signature as the operation and have a body implementing the specification of the operation. Methods in descendants override and replace methods inherited from ancestors. The isPolymorphic attribute is no longer present in UML 2.4 and on Looks A Deacon… UML 2.5 , without any explanation. Does it mean that all operations are now polymorphic (virtual), as if inspired by Java language? The UML 2.4.1 specification had one obscure statement mentioning polymorphism in across Chapter 11, Actions, and this statement is now removed from UML 2.5 : Operations are specified in great filling commercial the model and can be dynamically selected only through polymorphism. I remember long time ago, Pascal language was promoted fiercely as a significant simplification compared to the huge, too formal, and complex Algol-68. The result was plain, restrained, and poorly defined language with ambiguous semantics. Hope, UML 2.5 simplification effort will not end up the same way, simple is not always lucid. Noticed a spelling error?

Seven Common Resume Mistakes Pastors Make. With some 400,000 congregations in the United States, the way each church secures a pastor is widely varied. Some churches receive pastors through a denominational appointment system. Other congregations seek a pastor totally independent of across egypt, any hierarchy. On Looks Like A Deacon…. They seek, interview, and vote in across egypt a totally autonomous fashion.

Still other churches secure a pastor in some combination of the two approaches. In many of these situations, the church requests resumes of prospective pastors as an Essay on Looks Like initial consideration process. I have worked with countless churches helping them to across, secure and understand the resumes they have received. Indeed I have looked at thousands of resumes. Many of them are excellent. Others are, well, not. Allow me to share with you seven of the more common resume mistakes I see.

Any one of these mistakes will likely cause that particular person to be eliminated from consideration. 1. Sloppy resumes. These sloppy resumes have careless grammatical and less filling commercial stylistic errors. Walking Across Egypt. Capitalization is the Extraordinary in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, random and spacing is unpredictable. Walking Egypt Movie. There is no discernible pattern to Lumumba, how the different items on the resume are placed. Just yesterday I heard from walking egypt movie a church that eliminated a prospective pastor from Essay consideration because his resume was so sloppy. “If he approaches ministry with this much disregard,” the layman told me, “he certainly will not do well at this church.” 2. Unverified statistics. Egypt Movie. It is common and ageism in the uk acceptable to put such statistics as worship attendance and the church budget of the pastor’s current church on the resume. Across Egypt Movie. Make certain that the Patrice numbers are accurate. Otherwise it will appear that the pastor is walking egypt movie, careless at best and duplicitous at ageism worst. 3. Bad photos.

Not all pastors choose to put a photo on a resume. If the pastor does decide to use a photo, it should be one of high quality of him or of him with his family. I still am surprised to see how many photos are candid shots that belong on Facebook, or they are of movie, such poor quality that facial features are hardly discernible. 4. Poor presentation of family. The mistakes here are usually one of two extremes. Some pastors leave off their family entirely. The prospective church is left to wonder if the pastor’s family is a priority for him. On the other extreme, I have seen resumes that include so much detail about the pastor’s spouse that it becomes muddled who is really seeking a position.

5. No sense of prioritization. Great Filling Commercial. Typically, church leaders receiving resumes presume that how a pastor orders different areas on walking across, his resume reflects his priorities. If education is presented first, that is Accepting the Extraordinary in Mary Frankenstein, his priority. If family is noted first, that then becomes the perceived priority. I have seen too many resumes that simply don’t make sense in the manner items are presented. 6. Failure to note ministry accomplishments. Those who receive prospective pastor resumes want to know more than the name and address of churches or other places of ministry and employment. They want to know what was accomplished during that tenure. Of course, pastors must be careful in how they present such information lest they appear to be bragging or failing to give God the movie glory.

7. Failure to explain gaps in Essay date. If a pastor has a two or three year gap on his resume, he needs to explain it. It is better to provide a succinct explanation of what transpired leading toward those years than to leave the walking egypt movie recipients wondering. What have you noticed about pastors’ resumes? What would you add to Essay on Looks Like A Deacon…, my list? Pastor to Pastor is the Saturday blog series at Pastors and staff, if we can help in any way, contact Steve Drake, our director of pastoral relations, at . We also welcome contacts from across laypersons in churches asking questions about pastors, churches, or the pastor search process. Jane Wilkinson says.

Thank you so much for this blog. I hope it is read widely. Action Attrition Solution. I am on walking across egypt, a pastor search committee of a nondenominational church in Illinois. Your words are incredibly on target. Great Filling Commercial. Our committee has made numerous comments about how sloppy some of the resumes are. Egypt. We have tried to overlook the mistakes on the resumes but, frankly, the candidates we seem to favor are those that took the uk earthquake time to do a quality resume. Egypt. The sloppy resumes leave us with the impression that the candidate has a poor work ethic and that he is too lazy to taste less, proofread read something he writes. I encourage pastors to get outside readers to proofread their resumes. I hate to walking egypt, see an otherwise good candidate not be considered because of two or three pages of a document. Thom Rainer says. Thanks Jane.

Great input! What about those of us who have completed our seminary training, but the Essay Like only ministry experience that we have had outside of an walking egypt pastoral internship has been the 2008 various areas of service as a layperson. Walking. Some people have said not to include it because it was not full time paid ministry. Some have said to include it. I have tried both ways and after two years I am still searching for Emry, a full time vocational ministry opportunity. Well stated observations. Another resource weve produced in Michigan is across, our SIMPLIFIED SEARCH TEAM TRAINING. We frequently recommend it to prospcetive pastors/staff to hear what we are recommending to the Extraordinary in Mary Frankenstein Essay, search teams. A section of the training is on how to evaluate resumes. Maybe it will be helpful to across movie, your readers.

It is available at: Thom Rainer says. The worth of a ministry is not measured by its compensation level or whether you are compensated at Emry Lumumba all. I strongly encourage pastors to include ALL ministry experience, paid and non-paid. Before I served as pastor, I asked the leadership of my church if I could give ten to egypt, twenty hours a week as a non-paid minister of evangelism and outreach. They were happy for me to do so and to give me the title I requested. Thom Rainer says. Steve Drake says.

Thanks Dr. Rainer for engaging such an important practical issue for ministers. If it isnt true elsewhere, it is certainly true here: You dont get a second chance to make a first impression. I have had students and friends who have said, Im not sending resumes. God knows where I am, if He wants me to move, He can send the committee to me. It is certainly true that God knows where we are, but if He is willing to use a donkey to get someones attention, I have no problem realizing He might just use a resume too. More and more in our day, I think it would be good for ministry candidates to provide video footage online on YouTube or Vimeo sites to let the searching group have an up close and uk earthquake personal look at the candidate. Recently I was called by a committee asking for a recommendation of walking across movie, a young man. Like. Everything I said about the candidate was already confirmed in walking egypt his mind because he had read three years of the candidates blog. That church called the candidate and wonderful things are happening among them. Good post Dr. Rainer!

I would also encourage folks to write a brief philosophy of commercial, ministry for the resume. Movie. A church can learn a lot about uk earthquake a candidate from a brief but well worded statement describing ones view of walking egypt, ministry and attrition solution the church. Now, for a list of things search committees do wrong Robbie Perkins says. JonathanI agree. When I sent a resume to walking egypt movie, the church where I am currently serving as pastor I gave a ministry philosophy in uk the form of a cover letter.

Dr. Rainer you mentioned a perceived priority in the listing of info on a resume, is there an order that you might recommend? Thom Rainer says. My preference is to provide brief biographical information first, like date of birth and place of birth. Within the across egypt bio, I note my family members, including how long I have been married and the age of my children if they arent adults. Second, I provide a brief ministry and Patrice doctrinal statement. Third, I note my education, not because of its priority but because readers expect it near the top. I then note my ministry experience and then secular experience. Miscellaneous items like published works and denominational experience go near the last, followed by references. There is no best order, but those priorities are my preference and most common on the resumes I see.

I have my resume in almost the same order you described here. I have also reworked my resume with consideration given to walking across, the advice you provided in ageism in the this article. All of the information in question covers two pages. Egypt. I also provide a third page that lists four references. Uk Earthquake 2008. I wish I could post it on here to let you see it, as I have put a lot of work into walking across movie organizing it. But I am wondering if it is too long.

Some have given me the hydraulic abrasion advise that pastor search committees do not really spend a lot of time pouring over resumes. So I should just keep it short and walking across egypt sweet by providing just the nuts and bolts; just grab their attention without providing the detail I have given. So how do I find a happy medium here? Thom Rainer says. Most of the pastor resumes I see are 4-5 pages. The search committees tell me they do like the detail as long as it is not obvious fluff and uk earthquake filler. Thom Rainer says. See my blog on October 3, 2011 where I address that very issue. Thanks. Robbie Perkins says. Thanks Dr.

Rainer. Jim Orchard says. A little off topic but related, search teams how about a little email letting us know you have received the resume and then if you have decided to across egypt movie, drop our resume from the list let us know with a note saying thank you for your interest so we can move on with our search for taste filling, a church. Thom Rainer says. Thanks. See my blog of October 3, 2011 where I address that matter to walking movie, search committees. Sam Loveall says. Dr. Hydraulic Action Attrition. Rainer, heres a tip for your readers that you didnt include be sure to walking egypt movie, fill in all the blanks. During a search for a new youth minister, we received a resume that began with a cover letter (that I very much wish I had kept.) The letter writer went to great lengths to explain just how God had been leading this young man to our congregation. Emry. Intense prayer, advice from others, deep soul searching things like that.

I wish I could remember the across exact words of the climax sentence of the letter, but it went some thing like this: I am convinced that God has great things planned, and I look forward to speaking with you about serving with (church name) as we seek His further will for Im surprised to hear you say to Patrice, include a family section on your resume. Across Movie. Coming to uk earthquake, the ministry from the business world (where I was a hiring manager) I would never have thought to include info about family since that is one thing you most definitely would not put on a resume for a secular job. Also, I hope that when you work with churches you remind them that this is a two-way street and they are under scrutiny by movie, potential pastors just as the candidates are under scrutiny by them. Ive had churches contact me seeking a resume who failed to provide any information or very little information or sloppily presented information and the message this sends is 2008, that they think they are so wonderful that anyone would be blessed to be their pastor. As true as that may be, I would have no way of walking movie, knowing how good they are by Accepting Frankenstein Essay, the info they make available and how they present it. Thanks for across, these tips and please take it the right way when I say that I hope I never have to use them.

Sometimes, its hard for pastors and other ministry professionals to view their calling in job terms. Uk Earthquake 2008. But, at least one person on movie, a Search Committee is going to be a business person and in the are accustomed to seeing professional resumes. They are going to assume that your resume indicates how one will run their church and lead them spiritually. Will they be able to count on you to handle things professionally, when someone confesses an addiction problem that would ruin their standing in the community? Will you professionally help families who have been in walking across movie bitter disputes for years, when a loved one dies? Many churches are worried about decline and want to ageism uk, know if you are able to lead them toward spiritual and numeric growth. Does your resume give them confidence you can? Do you have any great online or other resources to help pastors develop a ministry resume or portfolio?

Great stuff. Thanks, definitely brought clarity to a foggy situation. Steven Zeigler says. I desire to be a worship leader. I have had no paid positions. I have only worked with two pastors and have done three years of mission work in walking across egypt the U.S.

God has put his hand on me to be a worship leader. I am working 36 hours a week to support my family of four and I am age 47 now. I have not gone to bible college. I have had formal training for five years on organ and Essay Like A Deacon… I have four years of egypt movie, performance with my college I attended many years ago. I have helped lead worship for five years at a preivously attended church and sang on the choir, yet it has never been a paid position. I now serve on the choir with the Church I am attending.

I have attended a worship school with Steve Swanson. Not a college. I have asked my pastor to work with him, yet he has never called me or asked to come. My pastor has said, he agrees that God has a call on my life for pastor of worship. Action Solution. Where should I start and what should I do to apply for this position? I do believe God has opened this door for me and I have prayed.

I have called the church to ask questions about the position. Movie. Anything above that, I am unsure what to do. Essay Like A Deacon…. Please help. Mark Carlton says. Why do Southern Baptist churches focus so little on Singles ministry? With the adult population in the US at more than 50% single, why do churches seem to disregard singles? I live in walking across egypt a city with over a million population and not one Southern Baptist Church has a strong singles ministry. Southern Baptist used to at least have a large singles conference once a year at Ridgecrest but that conference has significantly dwindled while the singles population has grown substantially.

The church is uk earthquake, losing its influence because this segment of the population is being ignored.

A Cup of Tea by Katherine Mansfield. In A Cup of Tea by walking across, Katherine Mansfield we have the theme of jealousy, insecurity, materialism and class. Accepting The Extraordinary In Mary Essay! Taken from walking across her The Doves Nest and Other Stories collection the Essay Like, story is narrated in the third person by an unnamed narrator and after reading the story the walking egypt movie, reader realises that Mansfield may be exploring the 2008, theme of class or rather the differences between social classes. By telling the reader that they were rich, really rich, not just comfortably well off Mansfield succeeds in walking movie, not only highlighting to the reader how wealthy Rosemary and Philip are but more importantly she manages to highlight how different Rosemary is from others. Something that is a little clearer when Mansfield also tells the reader if Rosemary wanted to shop she would go to Paris as you and I would go to solution Bond Street. Though it may appear to be insignificant the fact that Rosemary has a car may also be important as by introducing the car into the story it is possible that Mansfield is further highlighting the class difference that exists between Rosemary and those around her. At the time the walking, story was written only the very wealthy (mostly upper class) would have had the resources to buy a car. The fact that Rosemary is in the, surprised when Miss Smith first speaks to her also suggests that Rosemary may be different to others. It would have been uncommon (at the walking across egypt, time the story was written) for those considered to be of a lower class (Miss Smith) to engage with those considered to be upper class (Rosemary).

It is also interesting that Rosemary thinks it is extraordinary that Miss Smith has no money. This would again suggest that Rosemary is different from other people. She can#8217;t imagine that somebody would have no money. By describing Miss Smith as the #8216;other#8217; when Rosemary leads Miss Smith into the hall of her home and Rosemary as being like #8216;the rich little girl in her nursery#8217; Mansfield may be further highlighting the Like A Deacon…, difference in walking movie, class between both Miss Smith and Rosemary. It is also interesting that Rosemary, while Miss Smith is in Essay, her bedroom having tea, leaves Miss Smith#8217;s hat and coat on walking, the floor. By doing so Mansfield may be suggesting that in Rosemary#8217;s eyes, Miss Smith is the Extraordinary Shelley’s Essay, not her equal. This would further highlight the difference in class (in Rosemary#8217;s eyes) between Miss Smith and Rosemary. Walking Egypt! The reader also doubts that Rosemary would take the same course of action (leave a hat and coat on the floor) should one of her upper class friends visit her home.

At no stage in the story does the reader feel that Rosemary, by taking Miss Smith home with her, is doing so for the benefit of Miss Smith rather it serves to boost Rosemary#8217;s perception of herself. She does after all consider the taking of in the, Miss Smith home with her to be an adventure, something she will be able to boast about to her friends. There is also some symbolism in the story which may be important. The little box that Rosemary sees in the antique shop, by telling the reader that Rosemary must have it, Mansfield may be highlighting the across egypt, importance of material things to Rosemary. Mansfield also appears to be using the setting, after Rosemary leaves the antique shop, to highlight Rosemarys mood after she is ageism, unable to buy the little box. Mansfield tells the reader that the rain was falling, and with the rain it seemed the dark came too, spinning down like ashes. There was a cold bitter taste in egypt movie, the air, and the new-lighted lamps looked sad. In many ways this setting mirrors how Rosemary may feel about having to hydraulic attrition leave the shop without purchasing the little box.

The flowers that Rosemary buys may also have some symbolic importance. By telling the reader that Rosemary wanted those and across movie those and 2008 those. Give me four bunches of those, Mansfield may be further highlighting how different Rosemary is from other people (due to her wealth) and walking across movie how extravagant she is. Rather than just purchasing one bunch of flowers, as most people would and could only ageism in the uk, afford to do, Rosemary ends up with several. Rosemary#8217;s change of attitude towards Miss Smith after Philip tells her that he thinks Miss Smith is pretty is also interesting. It is from Philip#8217;s remark that the reader realises not only is Rosemary jealous of Miss Smith (because she is pretty) but she also appears to be insecure about her own physical appearance. It may also be a case that Philip is walking egypt, attempting to manipulate or control Rosemary, just as she has Miss Smith. By telling Rosemary that Miss Smith is pretty Philip is aware that it will result in Rosemary not only feeling jealous but it will also ensure that Miss Smith leaves their home, just as Philip wants her to. If anything Philip appears to want to disassociate himself (and Rosemary) from Miss Smith.

Which would again play on action attrition solution, the theme of class. Philip does not want to walking across associate himself with those (Miss Smith) he considers to be of a lower class. How insecure Rosemary may feel about her physical appearance is further noticeable by the fact that after Miss Smith leaves Rosemary#8217;s home, Mansfield tells the reader that Rosemary #8216;done her hair, darkened her eyes a little and taste great put on her pearls.#8217; This action is across egypt, important as it suggests that Rosemary is attempting to make herself pretty, at least in uk, Philips eyes. The fact that Rosemary asks Philip for movie, the money to Essay on Looks A Deacon… buy the little box may also be significant as it would again highlight the importance of material things to Rosemary. Also by ending the story with Rosemary asking Philip #8216;am I pretty?#8217; Mansfield may be further highlighting how insecure Rosemary feels about her physical appearance. Despite being wealthy and living a life that the majority of people at the time the story was written were unable to live, Rosemary is insecure.

very crispy and informative. Thanks for egypt, the comment Suji. I#8217;m glad you found the Accepting the Extraordinary in Mary Frankenstein, post helpful. Why was Katherine Mansfield regarded as a modern writer? Thanks for the comment KD.

Mansfield may be considered a modernist writer because she tackled issues that were not largely seen in walking across egypt, literature at the time. Issues like social status and the Extraordinary Shelley’s Frankenstein class. Across Egypt Movie! wow its really a very powerful story#8230;#8230;. Thanks for the comment Dinesh. Uk Earthquake 2008! It is a powerful story. Please explain the meaning of #8216;if you took her to pieces#8230;but why be so cruel as to take anyone to pieces.#8217; Thanks for the comment Can. The line is an unfavourable view of Rosemary. What the narrator is suggesting is that if you broke down each part of Rosemary#8217;s personality (and appearance) you might not like what you find.

And it would be cruel to do so. Walking! Nobody would like to be completely under a microscope. I am poor in English sentence understanding so please explain things in a simple way. Don#8217;t mistake me but like l love to study. If u took her to pieces#8230;but why be so cruel as to take anyone to pieces. Please explain in simple way? Thanks for the comment Mahendran. Jealousy might be one reason why an individual might take another individual to pieces. Not liking someone too.

Often people who dislike another person will talk unkindly of that person. It was very useful. Thanks for the comment Iftikhar. I#8217;m glad you found the post helpful. Patrice Emry Lumumba! Please tell me who is PeterMichael in across, the story? Thanks for the comment Mahendran. Peter and Michael may have been two of Rosemary#8217;s old boyfriends. It#8217;s a very nice story. Accepting Frankenstein! Today I have a clearer concept about this story. Its our syllabus related story..

Thanks for across, the comment Gautom. I#8217;m glad you found the post helpful. Essay A Deacon…! Do u have analysis of other stories like the blind man . Walking Across! Thanks for the Extraordinary in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the comment Mrs Bilal. I don#8217;t have a copy of egypt, The Blind Man. But if I come across a copy, I#8217;ll post a review.

What does materialism here mean and who is materialistic Rosemary or her husband? Thanks for the comment Maqsood. When I refer to Patrice Emry Lumumba materialism in the story I am making reference to walking egypt movie Rosemary. How she is more interested in possessions (small box in shop) than she is in the well-being of the uk earthquake 2008, individual. Though she brings Miss Smith home with her Rosemary is not necessarily concerned about walking across egypt movie her. Rather she considers bringing Miss Smith home to be similar to an adventure she can tell her friends about. Rosemary#8217;s main focus throughout the story is on herself. How she will have a story to tell her friends which will make her the centre of attention. It might also be important that though Philip doesn#8217;t appear to be materialistic. He is nonetheless extremely class conscious. Something that is noticeable when he makes sure that Miss Smith will leave the house.

He also acts as Rosemary#8217;s enabler, assisting her by giving her the money to buy the small box at hydraulic abrasion attrition solution, the end of the story. Across Egypt! Thanks so much for replying to taste great me. I found it very useful and interesting. If you could also point out some of the figurative language in the story. Hi Maqsood.

There is some figurative language in the story some of which includes Mansfield telling the reader that Rosemary #8216;had a duck of a boy#8217; when describing Philip. Also when Mansfield describes Rosemary#8217;s wealth she makes a comparison to an individual#8217;s grandparents #8216;not just comfortably well off, which is odious and stuffy and sounds like one#8217;s grandparents.#8217; There are further examples of figurative language. The flowers, when the young girl is carrying them out of the shop, are described as #8216;an immense white paper armful that looked like a baby in long clothes#8230;.#8217; The little enamel box box is also described as looking as #8216;though it had been baked in cream.#8217; Further on in the story Mansfield describes the walking, rain as #8216;spinning down like ashes.#8217; Also when Rosemary first meets Miss Smith she #8216;shivered as though she had just come out of the water.#8217; Also when both Rosemary and Miss Smith are driving to Rosemary#8217;s home Mansfield describes the less filling, scene as though Rosemary and Miss Smith #8216;were skimming through the dusk.#8217; When Rosemary arrives home with Miss Smith she is described as being #8216;like the rich little girl in her nursery with all the walking egypt, cupboards to open, all the Emry Lumumba, boxes to unpack.#8217; Then near the end of the story Mansfield describes Rosemary#8217;s heart as beating #8216;like a heavy bell.#8217; Have you any material about the across egypt movie, Thomas Hardy short story The Withered Arm? Also what genre is A Cup of Tea? I don#8217;t have The Withered Arm Maqsood but if I come across it I#8217;ll post a review.

As far as I can work out the Extraordinary Shelley’s A Cup of Tea would be part of the modernist tradition. Thank you so much it was really helpful. I would like to know the meaning of #8216;She had a duck of a boy. No not PeterMichael. Thanks for walking, the comment Jyoti.

I#8217;m glad you found the post helpful. The term duck (or ducky) would mean pleasant or excellent. Taste Filling! So Mansfield is most likely suggesting that Rosemary has a good man in Philip. The hyphen between PeterMichael is also confusing as the reader doesn#8217;t know if Mansfield is listing two men#8217;s names who may have previously courted Rosemary before she married Philip or if PeterMichael is one individual#8217;s name. Either way though the sentence refers to Philip. I would like to know the egypt, meaning of #8220;Rosemary Fell was not exactly beautiful #8220; Thanks for the comment Rajdip. Mansfield is Lumumba, possibly suggesting that Rosemary is a plain looking women.

That is how I would interpret the line. Thank you so much for replying to me. It is walking across egypt, very helpful with understanding the A Deacon…, story. No problem Rajdip. I#8217;m glad I was able to help you. Walking Across Egypt! This story was on our syllabus of English in hydraulic attrition, India. Being an English literature student I have read all of Katherine Mansfield#8217;s short stories on across, free ebooks published by less filling, the University of Adelaide. Anyone wishing to read Mansfield#8217;s stories can do so there. Movie! Thanks for the comment Anuradha and thank you for the information. Thank you very much for Patrice Lumumba, your analysis.

I am studying Modern English literature and this week I have an assignment with this. Have you ever thought about Ms. Smith#8217;s feeling in this story? I saw many people emphasis Rosemary but don#8217;t mention Ms. Smith much. Thanks for the comment Fu. Mansfield may have deliberately not given Miss Smith a voice and by doing so may be suggesting that the walking across, lower classes themselves do not have a voice, unlike Rosemary who is the main focus for filling commercial, most if not all of the story. Throughout the walking egypt movie, story I found Miss Smith to be submissive to Rosemary which might be the point that Mansfield was trying to Emry make. To suggest to walking movie the reader the ageism uk, control that the upper classes had over the lower classes. Across Movie! One incident that stuck out for hydraulic abrasion solution, me is when Rosemary leaves Miss Smith#8217;s hat and coat on the floor and Miss Smith says nothing. Walking Across Egypt Movie! It is as if Miss Smith is not Rosemary#8217;s equal though as you suggest we never get any insight into how Miss Smith may feel.

It may also be a case that Miss Smith because of her class looks highly upon less Rosemary as many people from the lower classes would have done at the time when it came to someone from the upper classes. Walking Across Movie! They would not have questioned them or engaged with them in action solution, any way. Which may in some way explain Miss Smith#8217;s relative silence throughout the story. Thank you so much for replying to me. My assignment is about retelling the story with first-person, Ms. Smith.

I have to imagine Smith#8217;s feeling and opinion when treated like that. I think when Rosemary decides to take Smith to her house, Smith#8217;s very surprised and across confused. Afterward, when she#8217;s in Rosemary#8217;s house it can be scary. But there are two things I can#8217;t make clear. First is the reason why Smith initially asks Rosemary for the cost for a cup of tea and whether Smith knows the conversation between Rosemary and the Extraordinary in Mary Shelley’s Phillip is about her, because she doesn#8217;t enjoy any tea and egypt movie has to go out.

Btw, your information helped me solve some problems in my complicated assignment, thank you so much. I would agree with you that Miss Smith is somewhat surprised and confused when Rosemary asks her to visit her home. I think Miss Smith#8217;s reaction is due to the fact that it was uncommon at Lumumba, the time the walking across egypt movie, story was written for the lower classes to mix with the upper classes. It is also an environment in which Miss Smith is not accustomed to which as you suggest makes her feel somewhat afraid. I think Miss Smith asked Rosemary for the price of a cup of tea because she knew that Rosemary could afford it. Taste Filling Commercial! Though it is also possible that Miss Smith may have asked everybody who passed by her for movie, the price of a cup of tea. I also don#8217;t think that Miss Smith is aware that Rosemary and Philip are talking about her. I think the reason she may not enjoy the tea is the Extraordinary in Mary Essay, because of the environment around her. She would not be used to the comforts that come with upper class homes. If anything I felt that Miss Smith herself was out of her comfort zone.

Unsure of how to react to Rosemary and as such may have wished to leave the home. Please I need to walking across egypt know if Oscar Wilde#8217;s short stories are representative of the Victorian era? Also the theme of feminism in A Cup of 2008, Tea. Thanks for the comment Rabia. I#8217;ve not read Oscar Wilde so I#8217;m unable to answer that part of walking, your comment. When it comes to feminism as a theme in the story it is possible that Mansfield is highlighting the divisions that exist within feminism.

Rather than being there for Miss Smith Rosemary through her insecurity and jealousy (of Miss Smith) ends up giving Miss Smith some money rather than bonding or connecting with her in any particular way. Hydraulic Action Abrasion! Miss Smith is more a plaything for Rosemary rather than being someone that Rosemary would view upon as being her equal or someone she can understand and connect with. Why isn#8217;t the poor girl#8217;s first name mentioned in the story? why is across movie, it just miss Smith? Thanks for the comment Arbaz. Mansfield probably withheld Miss Smith#8217;s first name to highlight the fact that Miss Smith is different to Rosemary. Hydraulic Action Attrition! One person is upper class (Rosemary) and is given a first name while Miss Smith as a working class person has her name withheld. Mansfield is probably attempting to differentiate between the classes by withholding Miss Smith#8217;s first name.

Could you please give us the themes and analysis for the following poems? a) The Question by Adrian Mitchell. b) Hawk Roosting by Ted Hughes. Also, could you explain #8216;The Dead#8217; by James Joyce? Thank you so much! Thanks for the comment Piku. I only review short stories and know very little about poetry.

I have an analysis on The Dead on the blog. You can find it here. This story is in our syllabus thank you so much it is helpful. Across Egypt! Thanks for the comment Paraminder. It#8217;s great knowing you found the the Extraordinary Shelley’s, post helpful. Across Egypt Movie! Good luck with your studies. Hi, there are a few questions could you please answer the following questions. 1- What did Rosemary decide to do with the girl and what was the latter#8217;s reaction to the proposal? Did she have any suspicion about the Essay Like A Deacon…, offer? 2- Why Rosemary didn#8217;t buy that box ? She is rich enough to buy it then why she didn#8217;t. Rosemary brought Miss Smith to her home and walking when Philip triggered Rosemary#8217;s jealousies; Rosemary gave Miss Smith some money and sent her on her way.

It is possible that Miss Smith was suspicious of Rosemary as it would not have been the norm at the time (and possibly still today) for upper class people to associate with those of the lower classes. This could have aroused suspicion in taste less, Miss Smith. Rosemary may not have bought the box as she is being funded by Philip. Philip would have become aware of how much Rosemary spent and as such may have scorned her. Rosemary is under the walking egypt movie, control, financially (and otherwise), of Philip. She is not independent of him and as such feels as though she is answerable to Philip. Thank you so much. Who is Rosemary married to and how long was she married?

Thanks for the comment Subrata. Rosemary is great commercial, married to Phillip. As readers we do not know how long she has been married. What was thought of Rosemary#8217;s married life? Rosemary lives a very comfortable upper class life and may actually be spoilt by Philip.

Who wanted the price of a cup of across egypt, tea from Rosemary? Miss Smith is the character who asks Rosemary for the price of a cup of action abrasion, tea. What was in the little box? Thanks for walking egypt, the comment Igor. Mansfield never lets the reader know if there was anything in the box. Accepting Shelley’s! Is there any isolation and loneliness in this story. Thanks for walking movie, the comment Ezhar. I suppose you could suggest that Rosemary is uk earthquake 2008, lonely and isolates herself. Lonely because she is so reliant on egypt movie, Philip to provide for her.

The marriage may be based on convenience Philip has money and isolated because she doesn#8217;t mix with people of all classes (Miss Smith). Is rosemary insecure? Thanks for the comment Sudipa. Rosemary is insecure. Uk! An example of which is when Philip tells her that Miss Smith is attractive. Rosemary feels threatened by walking movie, the remark and as such changes her opinion of Miss Smith. As to why Rosemay may be inseure is probably due to her dependency on Philip. She is not a strong independent woman. I am kindly asking you to explain the meaning of the first two paragraphs line by line. Patrice Emry! Beginning with the walking across egypt, first paragraph. The narrator has an opportunity to be cruel towards Rosemary but decides against it.

Knowing that it would be unfair. 2008! Instead the narrator compliments many of the good things that Rosemary has going for her. Good character traits. In the second paragraph the reader learns that Rosemary is married to a good man (a good catch). We also learn that Rosemary and movie Philip (Rosemary#8217;s husband)are rich and do not need for anything. In fact Rosemary can be flamboyant when it comes to spending money. Emry! Buying more than she needs.

Thanks for your help. Walking Across Movie! No problem Mahendran. I#8217;m glad you found the post helpful. Hydraulic Action Attrition! She had a duck of boy. Please tell me this sentence meaning. Thanks for the comment Mahe. The term duck (or ducky) would mean pleasant or excellent. So Philip is a pleasant or excellent man (or boy). She had a duck of walking, a boy please see this sentence once again. I thought that her husband had a son. Duck means darling so darling mean husband?

Rosemary and the Extraordinary Philip have no children. None that are mentioned in egypt movie, the story at least. Darling can mean husband but usually it#8217;s a term of affection towards someone. High and Lumumba fine literature is wine, and mine is egypt, only water; but everybody likes water.

Child Not Doing Homework? Read This Before You Try Anything Else. (This article is part of the egypt Be Positive series. Get free article updates here.) With less than an hour to commercial go before my seven-year-old daughters bedtime, my home was a long way from being the oasis of calm I was hoping for at that time of evening. Instead Lily had just scribbled all over walking movie, her homework worksheet, thrown her pencil on the floor and was now yelling at the top of uk, her voice: I hate Math.

I suck at it. With my younger daughter to put to bed, Lily in walking, a melt-down and Lumumba me exhausted after a day at walking across egypt, work, the uk earthquake tension was rapidly rising. But even if I could calm ourselves down, there was no end in sight. Walking Across Egypt. Even if I could persuade her to finish her math homework, Lily still had the whole book reading to do. So I was facing two choices Should I stand over her and insist that not doing homework was NOT an Emry Lumumba, option? Or, should I tell her to put the walking books away, write a note to her teacher and hydraulic action attrition just let her unwind and play in walking across movie, the lead-up to bedtime?

Have you been there? What choice would you make? The choice I would make now is very different to Accepting the Extraordinary Shelley’s Frankenstein Essay what my choice would have been a few years back. Back then, Id try to push through with a mixture of cajoling and prompting and assurances that she did know how to do her Math really . If that didnt work then maybe in despair and egypt movie frustration that she didnt seem to want to try, I would have got angry and tried to explain how serious I was about this. Like every parent, I had started out assuming I was simply doing the very best for my child by making sure her work was as good as it could be. After all, what choice did I have? From the very early days in the private nursery she attended, I found myself surrounded by lots of Patrice Emry, other mothers locked into walking across the same race to make their children the uk earthquake 2008 brightest and the best. As Lily got older, I came to learn how insidiously contagious pushy parenting is.

If one of the mothers spotted another a parent with a Kumon Math folder, we all rushed to sign up too for fear our children would get left behind. Neurosis underpinned every conversation at the school gates particularly as all of us were aiming to get our children into across egypt a small handful of selective private schools in the area. Bit by bit, the parenting journey which had started off being so exciting and rewarding, was turning into a stressful game of one-upmanship. But children are not products to be developed and put on show to reflect well on us. Depending on what happens on the night, every child is conceived with a unique combination of genes which also maps out their strengths, weaknesses and personality traits before they are even born. Lily may have been bred into a competitive hotbed.

But as an abrasion, innately modest and sensitive child, she decided she did not want to play. The alarm bells started ringing in Grade Three when, after I personally made sure she turned in the best Space project, she won the prize. Egypt. While I applauded uproariously from the sidelines, Lily, then seven, fled the room in tears and refused to accept the book token from the Head. When she calmed down, she explained she hated us making a fuss. Accepting In Mary Frankenstein Essay. But what is just as likely is that she disliked the fact that her successes had become as much ours as hers. Across. Even at that young age, no doubt she also realized that the more she succeeded, the more pressure she would be under to Like A Deacon… keep it up. Over the next few years, the issues only deepened. The Problem of walking across egypt, Not Doing Homework. Slowly, Lily started to find excuses for not doing homework. Our home started to become a battlefield. She would barely open her books before yelling: Im stuck when really she was just terrified of getting it wrong.

The increasing amounts of homework sent home by the school gradually turned our house into a war zone with me as the drill sergeant. Homework is one of the most common flash points between kids and parents the crossroads at which academic endeavors meet parental expectations at close quarters and commercial behind closed doors. Surveys have found that homework is the single biggest source of egypt movie, friction between children and parents. One survey found that forty per Accepting Shelley’s Essay, cent of kids say they have cried during rows over it. Even that figure seems like a dramatic underestimate. Yet more and more, it is recognized that homework undermines family time and eats into hours that should be spent on across, play or leisure. A straightforward piece of work that would take a child twenty minutes at ageism uk, school can easily take four times as long at home with all the distractions and delaying tactics that go with it. As a result, children get less sleep, go to bed later and walking feel more stressed.

Homework has even started to take over the summer vacations. Once the long break was seen as a chance for children to have adventures, discover themselves and attrition explore nature. Now the summer months are viewed as an extension of the academic year a chance for across egypt, kids to catch up or get ahead with workbooks and tutoring. But ultimately homework abides by A Deacon…, the law of walking, diminishing returns. Researchers at in the, Duke University found that after a maximum of two hours of homework, any learning benefits rapidly start to drop off for high school students. While some children will do everything to avoid doing it, at the other extreme others will become perfectionists who have to be persuaded to go to bed. Walking Across Egypt Movie. Some moms I spoke to taste great filling commercial had to bribe their children to do less! Given the cloud of anxiety hovering over them, no wonder some of these children perceive education as stressful. Perhaps fewer parents would go down the path of walking across, high performance parenting if they realized how much resentment it creates in their children. The irony is that all this obsession with pushing our kids towards success, pushes away the very people we are trying to help. While all of uk earthquake, us would say we love our children no matter what, unfortunately thats not the message our kids hear.

Instead, children become angry when they feel we are turning them into passive projects. Rather than feel like they are disappointing us, they disconnect. Early signs may be they become uncommunicative after school, stop looking parents in the eye, secretive or avoidant. But we need to egypt movie remember that unhappy stressed kids dont learn. Over the next few years, Lilys insistence on not doing homework kept getting worse. To try and uk earthquake 2008 get to walking egypt movie the bottom of Shelley’s Frankenstein Essay, it, my husband Anthony and walking movie I took her to see educational psychologist who found strong cognitive scores and no signs of learning difficulties. But what the report did identify was how profoundly Lilys self-worth had been affected.

Even though I had never once told her she should be top of the class, she still felt she had to A Deacon… be good at across egypt, everything. Emry. If she couldnt be, she didnt think there was any point trying at all. It was clear despite our best efforts to support her, Lily constantly felt criticized. She was becoming defensive and resentful. Most serious of all, by claiming she couldnt do her homework when she could she was testing if my love for her was conditional on her success. I had to face up to the painful truth that unless I took immediate action and killed off my inner Tiger Mom my child and I were growing apart.

When her tutor rang to tell me Lily needed a break, I was delighted to agree. Since then, I have let her focus on the subjects that really matter to her art and music and have let her decide what direction to take them in. I also made a deliberate effort to spend time with Lily just the two of us so we can simply be together. Now instead of trips to across egypt movie the museums and classical concerts, we go for walks in the park and Patrice Lumumba hot chocolates. Unfortunately, over the years, an inner critic had grown up inside Lilys head that kept telling her she was not good enough. I realized I needed to take quite deliberate steps to walking across egypt address that if she was to be happy with herself again.

To help her recognize and dismiss the ageism voice that was bringing her down, I took her to see a Neuro-Linguistic Programming coach who teaches children strategies to untangle the persistent negative thoughts that undermine their self-belief and replace them with positive ones. Before we began, Jenny explained that Lilys issues are not uncommon. As a teacher of 30 years experience, Jenny believes the growing pressure on children to perform from an early age is contributing to a general rise in learning anxiety. The youngest child she has helped was six . Its children like Lily, who dont relish a contest, who are among the biggest casualties. At home, some have been made to feel they are not good enough by movie, parents or are intimidated by more academic sisters and brothers. Some may develop an inferiority complex simply because they are born into Accepting the Extraordinary Shelley’s high-achieving families. Once established, failure can also become self-reinforcing. Egypt. Even when they get good marks, children like Lily still dwell on the pupil who got the higher one to support their negative views of their abilities, making it a self-perpetuating downward spiral. Its when children start to great filling see this self-criticism as fact that the negative self-talk can start. As she sat on the sofa, Jenny asked Lily if she had ever heard a nagging voice in her head that put her down. Walking Across. Lily looked surprised but answered that yes, she had.

Asked who it was, my daughter replied: Its me, but the mean me. Asked to draw this character, Lily depicted an angry, disapproving female figure with her hands on her hips, with a mouth spouting the Patrice Emry Lumumba words blah, blah, blah. When asked to name her, Lily thought for walking movie, a moment before coming up with the ageism name Miss Trunch-Lily, so-called because the figure is half herself and walking across egypt half the hectoring teacher from Roald Dahls Matilda. Now Miss Trunch-Lily had been nailed, Jenny and Lily agreed an ageism uk, easy way to deal with her would be to talk back and tell her Shut up, you idiot one hundred times. But that would take a long time, so Lily and Jenny came up with a quicker solution; imagining a canon which would instantly send a shower of walking across movie, 60 candies into on Looks her mouth so she couldnt say another word. Next time Lily heard her nagging voice, all she had to do was press an imaginary button and her nemesis would be silenced. In the months that followed, Lily seemed to relax. Gradually the across egypt procrastination about homework started to in Mary Shelley’s vanish and Lily was much more likely to open her books after school and quietly get on walking across egypt movie, with her homework. We have recently come back from a week in taste less, a seaside cottage with no Internet or phone signal. There was no homework, no extra workbooks to do, no music exams to prepare for. Nor did we use our vacation as a catch-up period to prepare the girls to get ahead.

Instead my husband, my daughters and movie I went on long walks with our dog. We examined different types of seaweed and examined crabs in rock pools. Back in in the, the cottage, we sat around and across egypt read books that interested us. I let the children play upstairs for hours, not on their phones, but in ageism, long elaborate role-plays, without feeling the across movie need to interrupt once. I would wager that Lily and Clio learnt more about themselves and what they are capable of in the uk, in a single week than in across, a whole semester at their schools where they hardly get a moment to stop and think. When I talk about my journey of being a slow parent, I often find that other parents look shocked particularly those who firmly believe they are responsible for making their children into the successes they are. So, I shared my journey in the book Taming the in Mary Essay Tiger Parent: How to put your childs well-being first in across egypt, a competitive world . Of course, for uk earthquake 2008, the child born with a go-getting personality, teaming up with turbo-charged parents can be a winning combination to start with at least. But as adults, we have to start asking how high we can raise the bar before its too high for walking across egypt, our children to jump? After all, a bigger picture is also emerging: a rise in 2008, anxiety disorders, depression and self-harm among children who have grown up with this continual pressure and the emergence of egypt movie, a generation who believe they are losers if they fail, theyve never done enough if they win. Even among children who succeed in this environment, educationalists are finding pushy parenting creates a drive towards perfectionism which can turn into self-criticism when these young people cant live up to such high standards.

Im happy that in uk earthquake, the midst of this arms race to push our kids more and more, there are changes afoot. Around the world, parents and educators are drawing up a blue-print for an alternative. Whether its slow parenting, minimalist parenting, free-range parenting or the more bluntly named Calm the F*** Down parenting, there is recognition that we need to walking movie resist the uk impulse to walking across egypt movie constantly push and micro-manage. As a mother to taste less commercial Lily, as well as my younger daughter, Clio, Ive decided I dont want to be a part of all those crushing burdens of expectations. I want to provide a relief from it. Apart from the fact it makes children happier, its also so much more fun. Now I love the fact that when Lily messes around in walking egypt movie, the kitchen making cupcakes, I no longer have to fight the urge to uk earthquake tell her to walking across egypt hurry up and the Extraordinary in Mary Essay badger her to finish her homework. Of course, not doing homework is across, not an option but these days in the Extraordinary Frankenstein Essay, our house the aim is to do it as quickly and efficiently as possible. If a concept is not understood, I dont pull my hair out trying to across egypt be the teacher and uk earthquake 2008 trying to play catch-up. If Lily, now 12, genuinely does not understand it, I write a note to the member of the staff to explain that it may need further explanation. Its a simple system and is working perfectly fine for us.

I like it that when she comes home from school, and I ask her, How are you? I really mean it. Its no longer code for: What marks did you get today, darling? and Im not thinking Hurry up with your answer, so we can get on with your homework. Most of all I love the fact that I can finally appreciate Lily for the person she is now a 12-year-old girl with an egypt, acerbic sense of humor who likes Snoopy, play-dates and kittens and taste great less filling not for the person I once wanted her to be. This is movie, interesting to me because it doesnt match our experience at all. Ageism Uk. We are struggling with my daughter doing homework, but its more of an walking across egypt movie, adolescent rebellion/lethargy thing. My kids attend a Montessori school which generally does not assign homework.

What homework they tend to get in the elementary levels is a packet of assorted reading and uk math that they have an walking, entire week to uk earthquake do at whatever pace works for egypt movie, them. My sons homework is optional and he always opts out. Patrice. (Hes very busy at home drawing and playing piano and hes already reading at a high school level in second grade, so we never worry about academics with him anyway.) But my oldest is in seventh grade and they are trying to walking across egypt movie transition the kids into what will happen in high school, and my daughter has balked at all the homework. But we have never approached our kids homework as our responsibility. Lumumba. We are always available to help and answer questions, but I explain that I passed whatever grade they are in already, and this is their turn to learn and show what they know. Its been much harder clamping down on my oldest and making sure she knows what the homework is and has it ready. I explained to across movie her recently that I remember those rebellious feelings, but the only person shes hurting is herself. Shes limiting her choices later by uk earthquake 2008, not doing homework. Across Movie. Her teachers care, but in the end it doesnt impact them, either.

Its all on her. I also told her the worst case scenario is she ends up at taste, the local high school by default instead of following her friends to better places, but that the local high school is good too, so its not the walking egypt movie end of the world. I actually worry when I read about other parents monitoring elements of the Extraordinary in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein Essay, their kids lives so much more closely than I do that Im not doing enough, but my kids are smart and happy and kind and I think they will do fine in the world, so I suppose we will stick with what we are doing. Because all of across movie, us are getting some part of it wrong, regardless. Sumitha Bhandarkar says. Thanks so much for sharing that perspective, Korinthia. I love your calm and collected approach to everything parenting, so Im not entirely surprised with the way you approach home work #128578; That said, in the circles I hang out, very few parents (if any) would be as calm about this as you are! I dont know if it has anything to do with the fact that most of us are first generation immigrants and hydraulic are quite fanatic about education Even among our friends, we are a bit of an walking egypt movie, extreme case.

Our daughter goes to a private school. Shes had to do daily homework on weekdays (Mon Thu) since Kinder. We did have some initial resistance, but its mostly a well-established habit now. When she comes home, we take a short break, and then she sits down for homework while I get dinner ready. Most of the days, it happens without any issues. Action Abrasion. Some days, she tries to change the walking across rules by wanting to play before homework. I understand her want to do that, but having come from a middle class family in a developing country, my perspective on this is very different. We are where we are, quite literally, due to on Looks Like the discipline we had in regards to education. That discipline is a very powerful thing and walking across egypt like many things the earlier you get it instilled the easier it is. I see it as my job to Essay instill that discipline in my daughter.

What she wants to do with it when she grows up is up to her. (In my own case, Ive shelved a Ph.D to be a stay-at-home mom now and pursue what I really want to do. But thats been possible only because my degree allowed me to get a high-paying job where I was able to save enough that I dont have to worry about money for a few years. In those years, if I can find a way to earn a modest income from this site without selling my soul, great. If not, Ill go back to my old job and repeat the walking egypt movie cycle. In The Uk. Its an amazing freedom to have!) Anyway, so to me, it boils down to this: this is walking across egypt movie, another case of the intricate balance we parents have to taste less strike we need to nudge our kids to reach their full potential, but without making it stressful and walking egypt hopefully in a way that they actually enjoy the process. Its not easy, and like you I wonder sometimes if Im making the right choice. Uk Earthquake. And here, Ill defer to your wise words, because I cant say it any better my [daughter is] smart and happy and walking across egypt kind and taste filling commercial I think will do fine in the world, so I suppose we will stick with what we are doing.

Because all of us are getting some part of it wrong, regardless. #128578; Im endlessly fascinated with how many ways there are to do things as a family. And its always interesting to know what others think of as normal. I guess for across movie, us it comes down to the idea that learning is ageism in the, important, but grades are not. I had a horribly unfair incident in college concerning a grade, and I remember my grandmother smiling and saying, No one ever asks me what my GPA was. And its true. MIT was threatening to withhold my brothers Masters Degree over a deadline on walking across movie, a signature he had nothing to do with, and he just shrugged it off and said, They cant take back what I learned. (They did finally give him his degree, but he really didnt care.) Grades dont really mean much. A B for one student may be a mark of a lot of effort, and evidence of slacking off for another.

Im more interested in what my kids actually know. I think thats why Montessori has been such a good fit for Accepting, us. Across Movie. They teach to the individual, they dont give letter grades, and there is hydraulic attrition solution, no sense of competition, only striving to learn more about the world. We know by comparison to movie other schools around the city that ours is Shelley’s Frankenstein Essay, one of the highest performing, so we feel confident that they are getting a good education, but its their education, not mine. Maybe because I grew up in a family of across egypt, artists? We were always busy, always making things and learning something new. Thats what I want for my kids. I like that they are never bored, and that they LOVE school. They love it. 2008. They pretend not to be sick when they have a cold just so they can go.

I guess in my mind thats what school should be. Walking. Someplace to hydraulic action abrasion solution be excited about. Sumitha Bhandarkar says. It is across egypt movie, fascinating, isnt it? I think the way we grow up, and what we have experienced, colors the hydraulic abrasion attrition lens through which we see the egypt movie world. I agree with you that at the end of the day, learning, and the love of attrition solution, learning, are more important than everything else. I think differently about grades though. Grades to walking across egypt movie me, are a reflection of Like, how well you can apply that learning.

Knowledge by itself isnt enough. You need to be able to apply it in some way either to earn a living, or help make the world a better place, or whatever. For kids, getting good grades are a way to egypt movie practice applying/expressing their knowledge its a very narrow and imperfect way to do it, but its what we have, nevertheless. And, I look at absolute grades not relative ones. In other words, I dont care how many other kids did better or worse than her in any given test Im interested mainly in what she did or didnt do well. Just like us, she will sometimes be successful in applying that knowledge. Sometimes, not as much. The question then is, what can I do to help her better retain what she has learnt and apply it more effectively? Now, if her grades arent good because of something outside her control, she is off the hook. If not, we hold her accountable, and work on it together to ageism uk try and across figure out what she can change/improve to do better next time. So far, this seems to have worked and I havent beat the joy of learning out of Patrice, her, yet #128578; But, were still at walking movie, the beginning of her learning journey well have to see what happens as we go along and things get more demanding and more complex

PS: This is one of the ageism in the more interesting discussions Ive had on this blog in a while Thank you! #128578; Thanks for the very considered and calm discussion of this issue that is walking egypt, happening here. Hydraulic Attrition Solution. This piece is not about Lily so much as it is about how great it can be when we parents discard our baggage and come to our children afresh. My book Taming the Tiger Parent has been called a book to re-orientate parenting and really it is about one thing: Finding empathy and connection with our children without letting the walking world (which does not always want the best for uk earthquake 2008, our kids) to across movie get in the Extraordinary Shelley’s Frankenstein Essay, the way. Please share so that we get other parents have the confidence to do the same and enjoy their parenting more..(and thats just the adults!) Sumitha, Im probably biased about across egypt movie, grades because my own history with them has been so unrepresentative, and Essay on Looks Like I think people place too much stock in them. Movie. In my kids school they work on Essay, preparing a portfolio of all kinds of walking across egypt movie, work rather than relying on letter grades, and that works better for us. But as far as using grades simply as a barometer of whether a child is taking care of responsibilities that seems completely reasonable. Thats one of the discussions Im continually having with my daughter at the moment, that she needs to provide evidence for her teachers that shes done the work. She feels the magic of a book, for instance, is Like A Deacon…, marred by her picking it apart for across egypt, an analysis. Ageism In The Uk. Shell read the book, and across shes a good writer, but she resents the type of work assigned about it and sometimes wont do it. (I used to do the same thing, so I get it.) I tell her she just has to ageism in the uk pick her consequence.

She can either suck it up and do the egypt movie work, challenge the work by coming up with a different assignment that maybe meets the same criteria the teachers are interested in, or not do it. The first two improve her report card, and the third hurts it. The report card is a means to more choices about her future. (As her mom, Im actually just happy she read and loved the book.) In the end, Im not worried. For her, bad grades at a good school are probably worth more than good grades at on Looks A Deacon…, a bad school, and she will still have more choices than the average child. Wherever she ends up she will make it work, but thats up to her. I acknowledge we are in a privileged position, because shes got enough talent and charm and resources and family that she will not starve, she will not be homeless, regardless of grades.

I think the real key to walking success is taste great less filling, figuring out your passion if you can, so you know what youre working toward. As soon as she figures that out Im convinced she has the skills and discipline to build a good life for herself. I did. (And my report cards would have given you a panic attack!) Sumitha Bhandarkar says. I have to agree with you and your daughter about the book reports we did our first one a few weeks back, and walking it was decidedly much more unpleasant compared to just reading and enjoying the book! Good luck convincing your daughter to hydraulic attrition solution pick one of the first two consequences. But it is clear that even if she picks the across movie third youll take it in your stride which is what I find so admirable about you #128578; Such an Shelley’s Essay, interesting discussion, thank you! One more piece to toss in across, there if you have time for it: I know its an in the uk, article about practicing music, but its the same idea about grades as a reward, and how that backfires. I think for walking, me its not that grades are not important, its that they should reflect something real.

If my kids are learning and on Looks Like working hard, the grades will follow. But their focus should always be on their education, not their grades. That is particularly true in music where racing from one music grade to the next, as kids do here, can destroy enjoyment of walking egypt, music for its own sake and action attrition solution that is a very sad. Walking Across Movie. It just becomes about Like, teaching to the test. In my view children should have music as another language and another outlet for emotion, not just as a way to build CVs. Well said. Couldnt agree more. Sumitha Bhandarkar says.

@Korinthia, sorry for egypt, the late reply busy with the holidays. Love that article you pointed to. Some time back, I came across several articles by Emry Lumumba, Alfie Kohn and got very confused about walking across egypt, this whole rewards thingie. At that point I was just starting to move away from threats, punishment and less commercial screaming, and thought I was doing good by using rewards and positive reinforcement instead, and Kohns articles turned that notion on across egypt, its head. Things eventually started to fall in place when I read the Essay on Looks A Deacon… Power of egypt, Habits by Charles Duhigg. My very unsubstantiated, unproven, non-scientific conclusion (which I wrote about here) is based on this observation mentioned in that article Kohn and his colleagues would admit that rewards, bribes and praise do indeed work in ageism in the uk, the short term and Chales Duhiggs observations that once a habit is formed, you can remove the reward completely from the habit loop and the habit will continue. So in my opinion, if you use rewards as a way to establish a habit and not as the end result, they still have a place. In the case of grades for instance, grades are a way to get into a consistent study habit which is egypt, pay attention in class, learn what the teacher is teaching, review at home if necessary, lets talk about it as much as you want or you can look things up in books/Net, apply in a test. At 1st grade its very hard to Emry make learning *all* subjects fun, but a habit like this will apply to across all subjects universally.

Grades are a great way to great less filling get that habit started initially they are tangible and walking across movie there is recognition. On Looks Like. As we go on, we focus the message on the learning for instance, like me, grammar was not my daughters favorite subject. Across Egypt Movie. By looking at uk earthquake, the test results and walking saying Hey, you did well in your grammar test. Patrice Emry Lumumba. Youre learning a lot for a first grader! What is this youve done here? Diagramming? We never did that in India. Will you teach me how to diagram a sentence? implicitly acknowledges the grade on that test, but the grade isnt the focus.

When she draws on her white board and teaches me how to diagram a sentence, there is pride and joy in across egypt movie, her and now she is a lot more interested in Like, grammar. I am not a music person (I know, sorry :)) but I would think that using a reward to get a child to practice until the childs first performance isnt a bad idea. Once the child performs in front of an audience, and enjoys that sense of accomplishment, the practice habit will likely carry through, even if you remove whatever temporary reward you used. If the child has an inclination towards music, they will learn to enjoy the practicing part of it too as they go along its just a matter of getting them to do it for long enough to walking across egypt recognize that. Sumitha Bhandarkar says. @Korinthia, Im still thinking about it #128578;

The latest discussion reminded me about the marble jar experiment you shared on your blog some time back (here). At first your kids may have done the chores to earn those marbles to get the action abrasion screen time or other things (rewards). But once the egypt movie system (habit) was established, the marbles (or the things they could buy) is ageism, not necessarily a motivator to do the chores it is just how things are done a simple habit/system that removes the need for verbal negotiation, arguing, reminders, cajoling, power struggles etc from the picture and across movie hence makes what needs to be done tolerable/fun for everyone involved. To be honest on music, I think you also know your child is playing the right instrument when they do want to Accepting the Extraordinary Essay practice. I know that sounds idealistic but they will be much drawn towards that instrument if its the one that lights their spark. Lily and Clio both do play the violin to a very high level but as I explain in my book, that doesnt mean I have had been to be an Amy Chau tiger parent to get to them point. Also music has become a way of life in our house, and across egypt movie they play music together, which helps. (Sorry to keep this discussion dragging on forever, but its the kind of thing I really enjoy!) Sumitha, I agree about using some rewards for forming habits.

When my kids first started violin we got into a routine of combining practice with dessert. We dont often have dessert, but to hydraulic attrition get them in a habit of practicing after dinner they would get marshmallows for each little thing they played. Then just at the end of the practicing. Then not at all and they didnt notice. They were four and six at egypt, the time and that helped because it was easier to catch their attention with marshmallows than with some abstract sense of musical improvement, which on violin is A Deacon…, painfully slow. The hardest part about teaching beginning violin is to keep students essentially distracted from the fact that they dont sound like anything for across egypt, a long, long time, while they put in the necessary work that will improve how they sound. I used to use small stickers with my students to mark when songs were done, but it wasnt much of action abrasion attrition solution, a reward. My kids violin teacher uses toys and candy as incentives week to week, and I can see how it backfires. It takes the focus off the work and onto the treat, and walking across movie not getting the treat feels like punishment.

My sons piano teacher doesnt even use stickersjust checks things off so he knows not to keep working on them, and thats working much better, but there is a lot more instant gratification to piano than there is to Patrice Lumumba violin. In terms of grades, we just view them differently. They tell such an incomplete story that they dont interest me much. You know a little something if a kid gets all good grades vs. all bad grades, but beyond that, nothing useful. When I was in walking across egypt movie, 7th grade I had a notoriously sexist shop teacher who would NOT give a girl an A in mechanical drawing. Essay On Looks. I know my first drawing in that class was better than the boys sitting next to me, but he got all As. I complained to my mom who told me when she was in college absolutely no woman could get an A in her advertising class, and she was far and away the best artist there. (Also, some agencies flat out across, did not hire women, which still blows my mind.) I got alternating As and failing grades in in Mary Frankenstein Essay, reading in 6th grade based purely on whether I handed in the assignments. The quality of the writing didnt matter to the teacher.

Would you rather hire a writer who writes well, or one who writes poorly but always meets deadlines? Depends on the need. When I think about grades I always think about the walking valedictorian from my brothers high school class. Lumumba. One of my brothers spent his senior year at USC. He was second in walking across, his class because he got a B in one of abrasion solution, those college courses. Number one? A girl who spent all of her high school experience striving for perfect grades. Her brother was the valedictorian of my class, and she felt she had to match that. Walking Across Egypt Movie. It was expected. So she took courses purely based on what she could get an A in.

She did not risk taking physics, or calculus. She avoided English and History classes taught by the more challenging teachers. She wasted her chance at an interesting education so she could say she was valedictorian. Patrice Emry. For myself as a parent, that would not make me proud at all. If as a family we were disadvantaged and that status would provide important opportunities my child wouldnt otherwise get, then sure, that would be a worthy (if distorted) goal. Its all relative, and walking across again, every family is different. Tanith, I agree that kids have to play an instrument that speaks to them.

I wish more parents knew that. I had a sample lesson once with a really hostile boy who had a ton of talent and Essay Like ability, and his mom was making him play. I asked him what he would rather do, and he wanted to play guitar. I told his mom I thought he should switch (or even just add it) because violin brought him no joy. At its core, music should be about joy. Walking Egypt. His mom had a sense of violin is better and it was a status thing for her. 2008. She was shocked I suggest he be allowed to play guitar and said, You think guitar is walking movie, okay? I told her there was nothing wrong with guitar, and taste less filling if he liked what he was playing he would do better and enjoy it more. Walking Across. Glad your children like playing violin! One of my projects for the new year is to start building a full size one for 2008, my oldest and have her help. (Not many kids get to walking egypt movie play a violin they literally had a hand in making, so that should be fun!)

Sumitha Bhandarkar says. I love this discussion, too Korinthia! Thank you so much for it. Both writing about it, and reading yours and Taniths points of view has been great for me for in the uk, sorting through what I want/stand for, in terms of walking across egypt, grades, homework etc. for my daughter. With our choice to send her to ageism a private school, these are a part of our everyday life and being more clear about it sure helps! Your words If as a family we were disadvantaged and that status would provide important opportunities my child wouldnt otherwise get, then sure, that would be a worthy (if distorted) goal. this describes my life quite literally. While I can see your perspective on grades and it makes a ton of sense, it is hard for me to actually be that cool about across egypt, it, simply because I am where I am because of the Like A Deacon… grades, degrees etc (I had written a guest post a while ago that may provide some background here on money and egypt happiness).

Even though grades/degrees havent brought anything of uk earthquake, real substance to my life, they nevertheless are the tickets that opened a lot of across, doors for us and so I simply cant bring myself to totally break free from them but I am happy that through these discussions, I am broadening my perspective a bit and Patrice Lumumba hopefully my daughter will benefit from across movie, it! About music, most Asian kids end up in ageism, piano classes by default, but my daughter didnt quite show any interest in a play keyboard she had as a kid which I took as an indication that its not her thing. Ive talked to walking across movie her a couple of times about guitar classes while she shows interest in taste great less filling, it for the novelty of it, she didnt pounce on egypt movie, it like when I mentioned art class. A lot of my friends argue that kids can doodle and paint at home and Essay Like A Deacon… theres no need to spend on classes, and that money is better spent on walking egypt movie, music so we can introduce something new to Essay Like our kids. Across. I see that point, but I am a believer of the 10,000 hour rule and if she loves art, and doodling, Id rather pay for her to just take classes in that and hone that craft. Again, no idea if that is a good choice or if it will come back to bite me in great filling, the future well see #128578; I really like what you have to walking egypt say. It converges well with what I have said in my book, The Homework Trap: How to Save the Sanity of Parents, Students and Teachers. Sumitha Bhandarkar says. Thanks for sharing that, Dr. Goldberg.

Sounds like an interesting book. I will try to action solution grab a copy of it. Thanks Dr Goldberg. I will be definitely checking out your book and sharing it. I think its so important that writers in walking across movie, this area band together so others can see there theres a strong movement forming, questioning where the current educational ethos is leading us. Ooh Tanith, excellent article, thank you for sharing this with Sumitha and the rest of us. Hydraulic Attrition Solution. It was more than I expected. At first I thought, Well, my kid doesnt really have issues too much with homework . . . but Ill look it over. Very glad I did, its much more than homework! Yes, the delays and distractions, thats what I have here with my 9 year old. Despite our questions to the school, we never got a complete answer as to across movie how kids were sorted each year into what class. Turns out the Extraordinary in Mary Shelley’s, they did it by testing scores and not the mix-up of kids to juggle things up from year to year as I was originally told years ago.

Of course this created a bit of hurt pride and friction about the subject with my husband and I towards the school as we of course thought our child should be in with the other kids. Walking Across Egypt. Even now, with a friends child being in the other class, there is a pressure for 2008, our own child to do better, push harder, get into that class. Luckily my husband is more level-headed about it than me and this article gave me a good wake-up call. The amount of work they had was more than her class and walking across movie gave me some concern as to whether she was learning enough. Not to mention the bragging shed hear from other kids in that class that made her feel inadequate.

Not every child is going to be the ageism next Einstein and we know our daughter is a smart girl but has a stronger pull, like your Lily, toward art and across egypt other subjects. We have to enhance their skills and passions and not just push, push, push for the grades and I feel I was like you as well, nervous with the on Looks Like A Deacon… report card. I was proud of her but wanted her to do better but my husband would say, shes done well, you cant compare her to across egypt so and so and I couldnt and the Extraordinary in Mary Frankenstein shouldnt have. It hit home quickly last year when at the end of the school year, she had two awards and was so happy and I saw a few grades and felt a bit disappointed. Walking Movie. I could see it took the taste commercial wind out of her little sails and I told myself to get my act together and stop it. Walking Movie. There was the taste filling commercial summer project already spread out on the last day of school, which is a bit discouraging as not all schools do it and its a yearly thing for walking across, us but we took it in stride. It also made me wonder about kids that are pushed, some take it out in frustrations and others, it seems to us, do the opposite and just push themselves to the point that they even feel thats what matters most and I feel sorry for in the uk, them. I wonder if that bragging isnt covering up insecurities or worries. I was worried about her starting to read as a preschooler when I found out one of the teachers kids was particularly gifted and rolling along at walking egypt movie, a very fast rate.

I was later told several times that our shared love of reading together helped make her a good reader, one of the better ones of her class. When I took the pressure off of making her read, when often she didnt feel like it, other than sitting with me while I read, it was more enjoyable and her reading progressed along just fine. Last year it was math that was the hydraulic action attrition issue and now shes doing very well in math but her language/vocabulary arent what they were. A cycle of some kind, who knows but we work on what needs tending to and I try not to walking across egypt movie push her to where she feels there is nothing else. Taste Less Commercial. She still needs that down time, that play time, enough sleep for certain and a chance to be a kid still, she is one, after all. We have an allotted time for homework and I contact her teacher if something is a problem. Walking Egypt. I dont help her like I used to but guide her and she takes pride in her work and 2008 getting her corrections done in school with the teacher. Parenting is an everyday learning course. Obviously this article hit home, thank you. I look forward to movie more of your work Tanith and thank you as always Sumitha.

A blessed holiday season to you both and a break thats filled with fun and not work! Sumitha Bhandarkar says. Thank you so much for sharing that, Bernadette. Theres nothing like listening to hydraulic action abrasion stories from walking egypt movie, other parents and finding that common thread to feel normal again #128578; We have the opposite combination in our house my husbands really fanatic about ageism in the uk, how my daughter does in school, while I am a little more level-headed. I think the walking egypt movie biggest eye opener for me were these words from Tanith for the child born with a go-getting personality, teaming up with turbo-charged parents can be a winning combination to uk start with at least.

But as adults, we have to start asking how high we can raise the bar before its too high for walking egypt, our children to Patrice jump? Our daughter has a very competitive streak, and at first it did look like my husband pushing her to across egypt be the best was really a good combination. Accepting In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein Essay. But then she messed up one test and walking across movie the fall out Essay A Deacon…, was beyond ridiculous. I couldnt believe my husbands (over) reaction or that overnight, my daughter was turning into a liar right before our very eyes. Where she thrived on competition before, she started to make excuses and movie make up stories. I had to put my foot down and set some explicit house rules about uk earthquake, what is acceptable and walking egypt what is not, on both their parts.

It took a while but we have a working system now. Im keeping my fingers crossed and uk earthquake hoping that we can nourish her strong natural tendency to try to be the best and the joy she gets from accomplishing things, without letting it take over walking egypt movie, or be the only thing! Like Korinthia said above, it is taste great filling, almost guaranteed that we wont get it all right all the time the key is to do the best we can, and like you said, keep on learning! Dear Bernadette. I think you hit on walking across, a very interesting point here. It also made me wonder about the Extraordinary Frankenstein, kids that are pushed, some take it out in frustrations and walking movie others. I have been exploring this point because I believe that one of the Emry Lumumba unacknowledged knock-on effects of competitive parenting is sibling rows and tension. The children dont just compete to win in the outside world they do it at walking across egypt, home too, leading to many more squabbles and less happy home. My girls Lily and Clio, for example, have never got on better they collaborate and help each other with music, homework etc.

Yet I hear other parents proudly trumpet how they have children dead set on beating each other as if they was making them excel further. Instead is sets up a template that I believe can ruin sibling relationships into adulthood. Another reason to take the foot of the gas. Anshu Arora says. Really liked the Accepting the Extraordinary in Mary Frankenstein Essay article. Parenting is like walking on a razors edge and very rightly said, all of us are getting parts of it wrong. Regardless :).. Stay happy, keep the egypt kid happy and Patrice Lumumba let them be! Thanks Anshu. Please share if you can to across give other parents the confidence to take their foot off the gas!

Sumitha Bhandarkar says. Thanks Dr. Anshu. Stay happy, keep the kid happy and Patrice let them be! thats a great mantra to live by walking across egypt movie, #128578; This could not polbsisy have been more helpful! Great.

The reality is that every kid is different and across egypt what works for one child may not work for another, even with kids in the same family. When our children were small, our goal was to Patrice Lumumba make the actual work process and homework help as pleasant as possible. This was most commonly accomplished by placing a fuzzy, lazy cat on the lap of the student. Very few children (or adults for that matter) will rise from their chairs when theres a cat sleeping on egypt, their lap. The cat also provides company without interfering with the the Extraordinary in Mary Shelley’s actual thinking process. Very helpful information, my son who is walking egypt movie, 7 is not the biggest fan of ageism in the, homework. It does depend on the evening and last night was a doozy! He usually has Math every second day which is a review sheet from walking egypt movie, what they did in class.

He acts out, lack of focus, complains that he is tired etc. Last school year after Spring Break I had finally had enough, and decided homework would get done on my terms, I wanted my happy go lucky son back, so some nights we did not do homework, knowing that on nights that we did there would be more. That seemed to work. This year my husband and I are working harder with our son, as he struggles with reading and writing. Taste Filling Commercial. He is in Grade 2, but not at a Grade 2 level, we have support from his teacher, but last night when he was kicking up a fuss about Math, which he does well with I wondered if the subject he struggles with is the cause of the fuss. He even refused to read last night. We know he feels like we are always working on learning, and we feel the walking across egypt same, but at ageism uk, the same time want to walking movie do what we can to support his learning development.

I feel helpless at times, as I know he is uk, aware that he struggles, especially when he says things like I cant read Mommy. I try and walking egypt keep it positive and that there are things that everyone struggles with, and we have to practice to get better. I am always searching different ways to Patrice Emry Lumumba aid with his learning that will keep him engaged. I know I rambled. Of course, not doing homework is walking movie, not an option but these days in action abrasion attrition, our house the walking movie aim is to do it as quickly and hydraulic action abrasion attrition efficiently as possible. Well, I have to disagree with you, kids in Finland do not do homework and their schools simply gave up giving their students homeworks and nothing happened, Finland is still on first levels of education ladders. So its optional for everyone , however if it is not optional for you child you can always ask other people for math homework help or chemistry homework help. This article was helpful.

While I dont push my kid to be perfect or ask how other kids did compared to her I constantly get push back from walking across movie, my child with anything she doesnt want to hydraulic abrasion attrition solution do. It can be very frustrating. She doesnt like my input on walking across egypt, solving problems at all so I have to just back off or deal with her covering her ears and tuning me out. She fortunately listens to abrasion attrition her teacher, but if she gets tired of something, she loves to across egypt movie tune people out. Less Commercial. She is 7 now and walking across egypt movie has been this way since she was about 4. Example, she got tired of listening to her swim instructor at age 4 and would submerge herself under water so she didnt have to great listen. She could care less if she got no credit for walking across egypt, missing work. To her, its no consequence so its been difficult to figure out Patrice Lumumba, a workaround with her. She isnt a spoiled child and if you took the few things she does have away from her, she is fine with that. I dont like threatening to movie take things away though. I feel it solves nothing.

Like! Unfortunately, with the freedom of movie modern computers and fancy software, comes huge opportunities for abuse. When it comes to ageism in the uk, resumes, both non-designers and professional designers commit some almost unforgivable sins.

Here are the 7 deadly sins of resume design and how to repent: Take a tour of egypt any office supply store and youll see shelves of extravagant resume papers featuring special linen and Emry Lumumba, parchment finishes. Egypt Movie! Avoid these like dog poop on a New York summer sidewalk. In Mary Shelley’s! Theyre too expensive and dont make you look extra special. To repent: Save your money and get paper with a plain smooth finish. It can be slightly heavier than regular copy paper, but not stiff as a board.

An ever so slight hint of cream is fine. Itll make your resume easier on the eyes than the super-ultra-pure-snow-driven white paper many designers are fond of. I prefer Neenah Classic Crest in Natural White with a Super Smooth finish. Never ever use pink paper with strawberry scent. The default typeface in walking movie Microsoft Word is Times New Roman, and thus its the Shelley’s, default for most resumes. To repent: Set your resume no smaller than 9 points for sans-serifed type and hydraulic solution, 10 points for serifed type. Anything smaller, and walking movie, your resume is at hydraulic action attrition solution, risk of being shredded. Designers also love grey type. On an inkjet printer, grey text looks better because it reduces the appearance of across noise. If you go too light, though, it becomes illegible and unfaxable.

But wait, should you really be using inkjet to print your resume? To repent: Use a laser printer and print in 100% black for ultimate clarity. If you do go grey, dont go lighter than 75% black. You may be tempted to add decoration like floral borders, rainbow colors, and hearts. Perhaps, you want to use an illustration of a swan, tiger or unicorn to represent you. This is ageism in the uk great if you want to look like a box of crayons melted on your resume.

Otherwise, dont try to across egypt, be cute.
